Multi-Vendor Robot Fleet Management

Multi-vendor robot fleet management refers to the operational challenge — and the emerging category of tools addressing it — of overseeing autonomous systems from multiple manufacturers operating simultaneously within the same facility, without a shared coordination or governance layer.

As hospitals adopt robots for different use cases — delivery, disinfection, transport, and eventually more general-purpose tasks — they rarely end up standardized on a single manufacturer. The result is a growing population of robots, each managed through its own vendor's fleet manager, with no institution-wide view spanning all of them.

How it differs from fleet governance

Multi-vendor robot fleet management describes the operational reality and the category of problem; fleet governance is one specific solution to part of that problem — the authorization and accountability piece. Fleet orchestration tools address another piece — the coordination and routing piece. A hospital operating a genuinely multi-vendor robot population needs both, since neither alone resolves the full fragmentation.

Why it matters in healthcare

The fragmentation compounds with every additional vendor a hospital brings in. Staff managing robots day to day — sometimes described informally as "fleet babysitting" — end up juggling multiple vendor portals, each with different interfaces, alert systems, and reporting formats, with no unified way to see the full picture. This creates real labor cost and makes institution-wide policy enforcement (patient safety rules, emergency protocols) inconsistent across the different systems.

A useful analogy

This is comparable to a hospital running five different scheduling systems for five different departments before adopting a unified EHR — technically functional in isolation, but institutionally blind to anything happening outside each individual silo.
